Six checks

What to settle before you order

None of these takes longer than five minutes, and every one of them is a reason people order twice.

  1. 01

    Clear the floor, then measure it

    Push back what you would push back on a normal afternoon, then measure what is left. The number you want is the clear rectangle, not the room.

  2. 02

    Check the door swing

    Four tenths of an inch clears most interior doors. Open yours over the spot the mat will lie and look at the gap under it before you order.

  3. 03

    Decide whether it lives there

    A mat that stays down wants to be the bigger one. A mat that folds away every evening wants to be the one you can carry in one hand.

  4. 04

    Measure the pen from outside

    A pen is listed by the outside of its panels. Leave a hand’s width around it so the mesh is not pressed flat against a radiator or a baseboard.

  5. 05

    Work out what the pen stands on

    There is no floor in the box on two of the three. Either put a mat under it or take the pen that arrives with one.

  6. 06

    Think about the second child

    The 79 by 71 mat and the 71 by 47 pen exist for households with two on the floor at once. If that is coming, buy for it now rather than twice.
