A bear the width of a sofa cushion sits in the middle of this one with a squirrel and a tree beside it, drawn in terracotta and green on a cream ground. Turn it over and the second face is a growth chart: the same bear standing at the side of a ruled column with a panda and a rabbit further up it. Of the five designs this is the one made in both footprints, so the room decides the size and the animals stay the same either way.

The colors are the reason it goes into more living rooms than the rest. Terracotta and sage on cream read as furniture rather than as toys, and the mat does not fight a rug or a sofa the way a primary-colored sheet does. If you want the quieter face up for a week while your parents are visiting, the growth chart is the one to use: it is mostly cream with a column of numbers up one side.

What is in a UANLAUO box

  • The mat, in the size you choose
  • Both faces printed, so there is no right way up
  • A carry bag

Putting it down

Where it goes
A cleared corner for the 59-inch, a room end for the 79-inch
Under a door
Four tenths of an inch clears most interior doors, but check yours before you order
Putting it away
Folds along printed creases, and there is a carry bag in the box
After a meal
A damp cloth. Nothing to strip off and nothing to wash
Turning it over
Both faces are printed, so the side you have tired of goes down

It arrives folded into a box the size of a large book. You open it on the floor you want it on, and in a day or two the creases stop standing proud.

A mat is padding and a pen is a boundary. Neither is a sleep space: the federal definition of a play yard is a framed enclosure that includes a floor, and the enclosures here have no floor of their own. The Consumer Product Safety Commission asks parents to use products intended for sleep - a crib, a bassinet, a play yard or a bedside sleeper that meets federal requirements - and to move a baby to one of those if they fall asleep somewhere else. Neither a mat nor a pen replaces an adult in the room, and nothing on this site should be read as saying otherwise.
